GE Appliances has partnered with Amazon to add Alexa skill sets to its WiFi connected appliances. Homeowners working in the kitchen can now ask Alexa, the voice who “lives” inside the automated Amazon Echo system, to assist with tasks around the kitchen, such as preheating the oven, checking the internal temperature of a meat while cooking with an integrated meat probe, or starting the dishwasher, all with a simple voice command.

But Alexa isn’t acting alone. Meet Geneva, the unique character created by GE Appliances and Monogram for the built-in Alexa skill set. Geneva launched in September of this year and is the first Alexa skill set from the company to control a broad range of kitchen appliances, including refrigerators, dishwashers, wall ovens, ranges, laundry and more. Homeowners can say things like, “Alexa, tell Geneva to preheat my oven for turkey,” “Alexa, tell Geneva to set the oven timer for 10 minutes,” or “Alexa, ask Geneva when the dishwasher will be finished.”

Promising review: “There are so many people who say the can’t cook, but I swear I’m on a whole new level of not being able to cook. But this little appliance helps expand my menu and I have learned to do so much with it! I love how easy it is and how I throw everything in and it comes out done. No stirring and not many messy dishes. I seriously can’t believe how many foods can be cooked in here! When it went on sale for Amazon Prime Day, I picked it up. I am all of a sudden a much, much better cook!” —Aundrea

To check this list, open the Alexa app on iOS or Android or go to alexa.amazon.com and click Shopping & To-do Lists. If you would like to sync your additions with something like Any.do or Todoist, connect your accounts in the Alexa app. For automatically copying your list to iOS Reminders, Evernote or another note-taking service, use IFTTT to create an Applet that will do one-way sync.

If you ask Alexa for recipe ideas, she isn’t exactly helpful. However, if you search for “recipe” in the Skills section of the Alexa app or alexa.amazon.com, there’s no shortage of options.

Promising review: “This bad boy really gets the job done! Price is good, and quality, size, and durability are spot-on. We like the way it looks with the rest of the appliances in our kitchen. We’re very happy with the features and the way it cooks; my wife likes the fact that she can actually peek and see what’s cooking without grease splattering all over the place. ENJOY!!” —Freddie

Promising review: “This little gem is NOT one of those small appliances I get and put on a shelf until the ‘some day’ that never comes. I LOVE THIS EGG COOKER, for lots of reasons. The key, to me, is I set it up for the eggs I want (add the level of the water for soft, medium or hard eggs) and — now get this — turn on the machine and WALK AWAY. I can go get ready for work and my eggs are ready for me in seven minutes or less. There is no worry about the cooker causing a problem overheating because the unit turns off by itself. If I forget I cooked some eggs for some reason, I don’t have to charge back home and turn it off.” —Julia Wolfe

Promising review: “I purchased this after much debate about whether or not I needed a two-quart ice-cream maker or just the original Cuisinart one for $49.95. I am so glad i bought this one. It is so great, easy to use, makes a lot of ice cream, and is so sleek looking. I have a tiny kitchen and every time I turn around I am buying something that will clutter my counter space, but I have to say, this I don’t mind.” —H. Woolsey
