Akurum is a fine product. The cabinets themselves are frameless, made of 3/4″ pressed particle board veneer. You can go to a designer gallery, open a few cabinets and find the same thing. No, they’re not wood, and that’s a good thing—wood expands and contracts with moisture and temperature changes. You can make a great kitchen with Akurum, if you’re willing to put in a little more time and effort. The fittings are predominantly made by Blum, a world-class manufacturer of hinges and drawer guides. You can find the same thing in a pricey designer kitchen as well. IKEA is mass-produced, which means a quicker turnaround from purchase to install, but the finishing options are going to be slimmer than with a fully-custom product. At any given time, IKEA only offers about two dozen different door styles, which are the easiest and most effective way to go, and what about 99% of kitchen customers do. The other 1% are custom woodworkers who buy the cheapest door style, use it as a template, and make something beautiful from it. Others hire a custom woodworker to make trim to match their IKEA fronts and end up with an Architectural Digest-worthy kitchen.

Based in Los Angeles, Semihandmade is a sister company to Handmade, which makes fine furniture and cabinetry. Semihandmade offers this craftsmanship at a lower price and makes doors and drawer fronts crafted to fit IKEA cabinets exactly. I worked with the Semihandmade owner John McDonald to plan out and order drawer fronts, doors, side panels, and filler pieces for my IKEA kitchen plan. I sent him the IKEA kitchen plan I made and he gave me a list and a quote of everything the kitchen needed.

Ikea Kitchen Cabinet Sale

My husband and I just built a new, custom house. We certainly don’t have an unlimited budget, but we paid more to get higher-quality materials where we thought it made sense. Happily, when it came to cabinets for the kitchen and laundry rooms, we got way higher quality at a way lower price by going with IKEA cabinets. We bought 24 cabinets with a bunch of features other kitchen suppliers charge an arm and a leg for–glass-front cabinets, deep drawers, inset drawers, soft-close hinges and drawer glides, trim, etc.–and the cost was about 40% of what our other quotes came to WITHOUT those features. (We did buy during the sale. And we did have to assemble and install everything ourselves, which was a lot of work and possibly not for someone without intermediate to advanced home-improvement skills.) We LOVE the cabinets. And we know they’ll last… because we also put an IKEA kitchen in our first house years ago! 🙂

They are warrantied for 25 years, so save the receipt and literature. It is transferrable, provided you sell your house or buy one with an IKEA kitchen, and as long as it was installed according to IKEA specifications. Measure your space before coming in for your first visit. Measure all appliances you plan on using. Aside from a dishwasher, there is no such thing as a ‘standard’ cooktop, fridge, or oven. Get it delivered. Delivery means it’ll take another week or two, but the order will be inventoried piece by piece before shipping, and if you have any problems, every IKEA has an after-sales department that will take care of you. If you need or want it right away, a cash & carry order for a kitchen takes several hours to pull from the warehouse and involves dozens if not hundreds of parts. They almost certainly won’t have all the parts you need, which means multiple visits and if you have a problem, take a number and wait at returns & exchanges. If you leave without something you paid for, you’re SOL. Then you have to have a pickup or U-Haul to take it all away.

I’ve been considering getting an IKEA island for my kitchen since I choice to keep my 1959 cabinets but put in new appliances and raise the ceiling. I’ve also heard IKEA stuff isn’t known for lasting very long. That being said, you don’t mention if you have children. I’m curious if they would stand up to the wear and tear of the average American family as compared to a newlywed couple? I’m still going to look into my IKEA island and I greatly appreciate reading your input. The granite countertops sound like something I need! 🙂 Best, Jenn

IKEA sells things at the prices they do because they have slim margins and little labor cost in assembly and shipping. The catch is the end user either a) does it themselves, or b) hires it done for a fee. What this means for a kitchen is that you measure, plan, and order it yourself with a little bit of help from IKEA staff—or hire this work done by IKEA certified local subcontractors.

Besides price, this was the single biggest factor for us. IKEA’s system is so flexible and modular, you can buy the cabinets without any doors or drawer fronts. I liked IKEA’s flexibility and price, but I wasn’t crazy about their various finishes. I wanted real wood veneer, and also a custom color for some of the cabinets. (IKEA cabinets are hard to paint well.)

This is pretty simple: We ordered our whole kitchen over the summer, during one of IKEA’s big kitchen sales. Usually the way these work is that if you spend a certain amount you will get 10% off, and if you spend a little more, 20%. We also purchased our bathroom cabinetry during this sale (we used kitchen cabinets in our master bath) and a big pantry unit, as well as a kitchen island as a workbench for my husband in the basement. We loaded up! And it was all 20% off. Obviously this really makes a difference in the budget.

In 2015, IKEA ended production of its popular Akurum kitchen cabinet system. More than 7.7 million Akurum cabinets were sold following their debut in 1995, according to IKEA. Taking its place is the Sektion model, which carries over Akurum’s soft-close drawers and doors, wall-mounted rail systems, and 25-year warranty.

Before setting an appointment with an IKEA designer, be sure to take careful measurements of your kitchen layout. Use IKEA’s planning tools to get the ball rolling. Bring photos of your existing kitchen, along with any blueprints you might have.

Today, I’m sharing some great insider info found in our comments section. Drew wrote: I worked for IKEA for four years—one as a kitchen planner, three as an interior designer. If you buy an IKEA kitchen, specifically the Akurum fitted line that the rest of the world outside the US calls Faktum, you can get a great product. The question is what’s your time worth to you?

Each year, IKEA holds kitchen sales events that deliver a significant discount on your total purchase. This year's sale just kicked off, and if you’re in the market for a new kitchen, now's the time to shop.

But don’t delay. Planning and mapping out a new kitchen takes time, especially if you want to use IKEA’s in-house kitchen planning services, and the sale only runs through Sunday, April 17, 2016.

IKEA isn’t well-known for selling appliances, though its products are made by reputable third-party manufacturers like Whirlpool. For the kitchen sale, appliances will count towards the $4,000 threshold for the rebate. This fact isn’t spelled out on the company’s website or in its leaflets, but a salesperson assured us they are eligible. However, kitchen furniture and accessories like utensils and glassware aren't eligible.

IKEA’s kitchen fittings and cabinets are sold in modular elements of cabinets, drawers, and fronts, so you can assemble an entire kitchen yourself and customize it, to a point. It’s a painstaking process and a lot of work to plan a kitchen and assemble each cabinet — but the cost savings are often enormous for those building new kitchens and renovating.

We thought we were super prepared and we breezed into the IKEA store, which is about 90 miles away from where we live, hoping to be out in a couple hours. Ha ha. No way. The ordering process for the cabinets is quite involved. You bring in your IKEA kitchen plan, and then log in to their computers and show it to a (probably harried) employee. The employee has to go through and order each piece on your list, bit by bit. This is the downside of such a modular system — you are essentially ordering hundreds of little boxes at once.

In the past, IKEA’s kitchen events occurred two or three times a year, according to a salesperson we spoke to. But it’s been a year since the last sale, and it may be that these promotions will be held only annually going forward.

I’ve explained our big kitchen project, shown you the demolition, and shared our financing, and now it’s time to get down to business. The bones of a kitchen are the cabinets and their layout, and we knew from the beginning that we wanted to use IKEA’s cabinet system. Here are some things we learned along the way.
