Inside the Bay If you choose to treat the windows as separate pieces, each window will have it’s own individual treatment that is mounted inside the bay. Yet the window treatments work in harmony. Here, a single angled rod custom-made to fit inside the shape of the bay crowns the windows. It supports patterned curtain panels that fall to the floor and aren’t hindered by built-in seating. If there were a built-in bench, the curtains could be hemmed short enough to accommodate it. Each window has its own covering and privacy control. Another variation on this idea is less for privacy and more for softness and pattern: Instead of full curtains, there might be only two slender panels that flank the bay on either side.

Outside the Bay The approach you take to dressing bay windows depends on whether you treat the windows as one large unit or several joined pieces. In this case, the windows are treated as one single unit, with curtains that hang outside the bay. The windows themselves surround a radiator, which is topped by a cushioned built-in bench. There is ample header space above the windows to hang a long, straight curtain rod for floor-to-ceiling panels. When the curtains are open, they act as a decorative picture frame for the window seat and the view beyond. When closed, they turn the bench into a snug nook and become a fanciful backdrop for the dining table.

If you like the look of each window dressed separately, there are other approaches that highlight the architecture. The key is to have the treatments mounted inside the window molding. Just the opposite of treating windows in unison, these treatments are designed not to touch at the edges, but instead to reside within the window frame. In this kitchen area, for example, the windows are spaced a bit apart in the bay, so individual treatments make sense. Plantation shutters are installed inside the molding to cover the bottom of each window. A pleated valance covers the top portion of the window, staying within the boundary of the trim. By keeping the treatments identical, the bay still appears contiguous.

Love this. I’ve got a bay shaped wall (I’m missing the 2 side windows to make it a bay window in my mind…) that I both love and hate. I love the shape of the wall and the extra bit of space that it gives, however in the winter it is the coldest spot in my house so curtains are a must for it. Only problem is I’m not willing to spend the money for a bay window curtain rod and a regular rod just doesn’t work… thinking I might have to go to the electrical section at home depot for when I turn my attention to that room. Thanks for sharing, looking forward to fixing my little issue. Ricki

The best placement for drapery panels is on the return walls of the bay window, suggests designer Amy Bubier. “They should frame the bay, not clutter it or obstruct the view, so choose fabrics wisely,” Bubier says. To prevent draperies from looking short, designer Jessica Nixon says to hang them as high as possible. Raise the rod to two inches below the crown molding to visually raise the ceilings in any room. Another way to treat bay windows as one coordinated unit is to choose individual treatments that conjoin. For example, these identical Roman shades are sized differently to fit each window, but they are mounted outside the windows’ molding so they fit snugly next to each other. This creates the effect of melding the windows together visually. You can create the same effect with any style of shades, like woven rattan or cellular, as long as they are mounted outside the molding and meet at the edges. You can also create a similar look with one long valance that spans the tops of all the windows, or cafe curtains that stretch across the windows’ midsections.

With the layout of a bay window, it can be difficult to find a rod that works well. Designer Wimberley Earp of Casa Fiora suggests using hinged elbows that swivel and allow for a continuous rod application. A great solution for window seats are ceiling-mount brackets. “The type of rod you select will fit with the style of the room — you need to determine the look you want to achieve,” Earp says.

Silk panels are a traditional way to update the look of any bay window. For a contemporary twist, designer Jessica Nixon suggests applying a fabric tape or braid to the inside of each panel. “Another option would be to use two colors of silk: one for the body of the drape and a one- or two-foot band at the top or bottom of the silk panel,” Nixon says. THIS IS PERFECT! I have been swearing at our over extended curtain rods that don’t support the weight of the double window, thermal insulated curtains that are hung on them. And I am so sick of the two pieces of rod sliding apart (My mom, who lives with us, stopped this problem on one with duct tape.) I can’t wait to go to Home Depot! Thanks again for the idea.
